Getting Started

1.1 About Kicks #

Kicks is a fully Online Store 2.0 Shopify theme built around flexible, “sections-everywhere” templates. Every page in the theme — including the header and footer — is made up of sections, and most sections can contain content blocks, so you can rearrange, add, or remove content without touching code.

1.2 Before You Start #

  • A Shopify store on any plan that supports custom themes.
  • The Kicks theme .zip file provided to you.
  • Product, collection, and page content ready to add (images, copy, navigation links).
  • (Recommended) A staging or preview environment so you can configure the theme before publishing it live.

1.3 Installing the Theme #

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin.
  2. Go to Online Store → Themes.
  3. Under the Theme library section, click Add theme → Upload theme.
  4. Select the Kicks .zip file and click Upload.
  5. Once the upload finishes, the theme appears in your Theme Library as Kicks.
  6. Click Actions → Preview to review the theme before going live, or Actions → Publish to make it your store’s active theme immediately.

Tip: Keep a backup copy of the original .zip file, and avoid uploading the same theme twice under a live store — use Preview first so you can configure settings without affecting your storefront.

1.4 The Theme Editor #

Open the theme editor by clicking Customize next to Kicks in your Theme Library. The editor is split into three areas:

  • Left panel — the list of sections and blocks on the page/template you’re currently editing, plus a page/template switcher at the top.
  • Center preview — a live, interactive preview of the storefront.
  • Right-hand settings panel — appears once you select a section or block, and lets you edit its text, images, colors, and layout options.

1.5 Sections, Blocks, and Online Store 2.0 #

  • Every page is built from sections (e.g. Slideshow, Featured Collection, Testimonials).
  • Most sections accept blocks — smaller pieces of content (Heading, Text, Image, Button, etc.) that live inside a section.
  • Because Kicks is fully Online Store 2.0, sections can be added, removed, and reordered on any template — home page, product page, collection page, blog, cart, and even the header and footer groups.
  • Use Add section at the bottom of the left panel to add a new section to a page.
  • Use Add block inside a section to add content to it.
  • Drag and drop (or use the up/down arrows) to reorder sections and blocks.

1.6 Common Section Controls #

Most content sections in Kicks share the same handful of layout controls. Rather than repeat them in every section’s table throughout this guide, they’re documented once here:

SettingTypeDescription
Color schemeColor schemeApplies one of your global color schemes (defined in Theme settings → Colors) to the section’s background, text, and accents.
Section widthDropdownConstrains the section to the theme’s Page width setting, or lets it stretch Full width of the browser.
Top padding / Bottom paddingSliderControls the vertical spacing above and below the section’s content, in pixels.

Sections that support content blocks also share a consistent pattern: click Add block, choose a block type, then use the block’s own settings panel (and the Content blocks reference, Section 7) to configure it.

1.7 Setting Up Navigation #

Menus shown in the header and footer are managed under Online Store → Navigation in Shopify admin, then selected from the relevant setting:

  • The header’s Main menu setting (see Header).
  • The header’s Customer account menu, used for the account dropdown/drawer.
  • Each Link block inside the Footer section, where you choose which menu to display in that footer column.

Mega menus are configured by adding Mega menu item blocks to the Header section — see Header below for the full block reference.

1.8 Quick Start Checklist #

  1. Upload and preview the theme (1.3).
  2. Set your logo, favicon, colors, and fonts under Theme settings (Section 2).
  3. Build your navigation menus, then assign them in the Header and Footer sections.
  4. Configure the homepage sections that came with the theme, or add your own (Section 6).
  5. Review product, collection, cart, and account page settings.
  6. Test checkout, search, and mobile responsiveness in Preview mode.
  7. Publish the theme.
